Specchio

Specchio

The aim of the Specchio ('mirror' in Italian) study is to find out more about and monitor the state of health of Geneva's population over time.

Using online questionnaires, the study assesses which risk factors linked to our environment and lifestyles can have an impact on our health, both now and in the future. Specchio also seeks to highlight the social, demographic and geographical inequalities in health within the canton's population.

What are the aims of the Specchio study?

The number and diversity of data collected repeatedly over time will make it possible to:

  • describe and monitor changes in the frequency of certain diseases and their risk factors, over time and across their geographical distribution within the canton of Geneva
  • contribute to the development and promotion of accurate public health recommendations, by assessing as closely as possible the realities and needs of the population at present and in the future
  • produce data that will be useful to public health decision-makers in developing measures to promote better health for all, at all stages of life.

How does the Specchio study work?

The Specchio-Hub secure digital platform facilitates interactive and dynamic monitoring of the Specchio cohort, which includes several thousand participants that are representative of the general population in Geneva.

  • Participants create an account on the Specchio-Hub platform.
  • Participants complete online questionnaires two to four times a year. These questionnaires focus on their state of health, i.e. their illnesses, but also their perception of their quality of life, their well-being and their physical and mental health in relation to factors such as diet, physical exercise, economic resources and housing, social and family ties, mobility, sleep, the environment, working conditions and ageing.
  • The data collected is then analyzed in the strictest confidentiality to produce statistical results based on the responses of several thousand participants.
