Bus Santé

In Switzerland, non-communicable diseases are responsible for over 50% of premature deaths, i.e. deaths occurring before the average age of death.

All age groups and all regions are affected by non-communicable diseases.

What are the aims of the Bus Santé study?

  • To estimate each year the prevalence, i.e. the number of cases of non-communicable (non-contagious) diseases in the population, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer.
  • determine the prevalence of risk factors for these diseases, such as smoking, alcohol, lack of physical activity, etc.

Who can participate?

Each year, by invitation, participation in the Bus Santé study is open to 1,000 adults, aged 18 to 74, living in the canton of Geneva. Participants are selected at random from the register held by the Cantonal Office of Population and Migration (OCPM).

What does participation involve?

  • Several questionnaires to be completed online on the Specchio-Hub platform. Paper questionnaires are available on request.
  • A free health check lasting around 45 minutes, including a number of measurements: body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, blood pressure and, for some people, bio-impedance (to determine the body's composition in terms of water, fat and muscle). The physical examination also includes a blood test to measure cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

More than 20,000 Geneva residents have already participated in the Bus Santé study since it was launched in 1992.

Health Bus Studies * About 2

The results of the health check-up are sent to participants free of charge, in their personal space on the secure digital Specchio-Hub platform or by post (on request).
