Thirty years of population epidemiology in Geneva

How did population epidemiology originate and how has it evolved over the last thirty years? What are the current challenges?

Professor Idris Guessous, head of the Population Epidemiology Unit (UEP) at the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) from 2009 to 2018 and currently Senior Physician in the Department of Primary Care Medicine, answers these questions in a recent interview published in the Swiss Medical Journal. The interview retraces the history of population epidemiology in Geneva: the birth of the Bus Santé study in the 1990s, followed by the development of the Specchio-Hub platform, which, thanks to technological advances and digital assets, brings together a number of studies aimed at gaining a better understanding of the social, economic and demographic factors affecting health in the region.
